Obesity may be helped with diabetes medication

A diabetes medication has been shown to help obese patients with weight loss.
U.S (WiredPRNews.com) – The diabetes drug liraglutide has been shown to be effective in boosting weight loss in individuals who are obese. As reported by HealthDay News, a study concluded that the medication was more effective than orlistat, a medication prescribed for weight-loss, for patients who do not have diabetes.
As noted in the report, 564 obese patients without diabetes were chosen for the study. The patients were administered liraglutide, orlistat, or a placebo daily, in addition to being placed on a restrictive diet, and incorporating more physical activity into their lifestyle.
Dr. Arne Astrup, with the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, and colleagues are quoted by HeathDay as stating of the findings, “The results of this study indicate the potential benefit of liraglutide, in conjunction with an energy-deficit diet, in the treatment of obesity and associated risk factors.”
