DES MOINES, Iowa — The Blank Park Zoo’s twin cotton-top tamarins have been named after former Iowa basketball star Caitlin Clark.

Zoo lovers were able to vote on names for the cotton-top tamarins who were born in February. With over 500 votes the two have now been named Caitlin and Clark.

The other pairs of names included Alina and Arturo, which received 302 votes, and Miguela and Tulio, which got 295 votes.

Cotton top tamarins are a critically endangered species due to the illegal pet trade, deforestation and the loss of their habitat, according to the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). Blank Park Zoo hopes the tamarins’ recognizable name will bring more awareness to the species and the efforts to help save them.
