Centre for Human Drug Research to Sponsor the 14th annual Pain Therapeutics Conference

Pain Therapeutics 2014

Microneurography can record and quantify spontaneous nerve impulses directly from peripheral nociceptors in animals and humans.
— Jordi Serra, Neuroscience Technologies
LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM, April 17, 2014 /EINPresswire.com/ -- SMi Group are delighted to announce that the Centre for Human Drug Research (CHDR) will be sponsoring the 14th annual Pain Therapeutics Conference taking place on 19th and 20th May in Central London.

The Centre for Human Drug Research (CHDR) offers a range of pain models to assess pain perception in healthy subjects and patient populations. When used in combination, the tests of the ‘PainCart’ battery can be an important investigational tool for assessing analgesic effects in early phase clinical trials. The complete battery of tests provides important information to demonstrate proof of concept or mechanism of action of a newly developed analgesic.

In addition to this, attendees at Pain Therapeutics will be able to hear more on microneurography as a method for recording individual action potentials from nociceptors and its value in drug development in neuropathic pain. A keynote presentation by Jordi Serra, CSO from Neuroscience Technologies Ltd will analyse analgesic efficacy in preclinical animal models and review proof-of-concept studies that allow critical testing of presumed mechanism of actions.

When asked about microneurography, Jordi Serra said:

“Quantification of spontaneous pain in animals is still problematic. Current animals models mostly use measures of evoked pain, with low translational value. Microneurography can record and quantify spontaneous nerve impulses directly from peripheral nociceptors in animals and humans. It has excellent face and construct validity to test the efficacy of new compounds in stopping abnormal ongoing activity in peripheral nociceptors."

Other areas to be covered at the event include a discussion on new mechanisms - bench to bedside, enhancing the translation of animal data into pain patients, advances in opiods and neuropathic pain.
