Our practice provides the most comprehensive and advanced university-level care available on Long Island, as their selection for this list confirms.”
— Michael H. Brisman

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, NY, USA, July 29, 2014 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Dr. Pile-Spellman is the only Long Island interventional neuroradiologist selected for New York Magazine’s 2014 list, while Dr. Brisman is one of two Long Island-based neurosurgeons chosen, and the only Nassau County neurosurgeon on the list. Both are attending physicians with the Neuroendovascular Center of Neurological Surgery, P.C., one of the Northeast’s leading practices of neurosurgeons and allied specialists.

"We congratulate our colleagues on receiving this honor," said Michael H. Brisman, M.D., F.A.C.S., CEO at Neurological Surgery, P.C. "Our practice provides the most comprehensive and advanced university-level care available on Long Island, as their selection for this list confirms."

The names on the magazine’s "Best Doctors" list are provided by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., a New York City research and information company. Castle Connolly publishes an annual guidebook, Top Doctors: New York Metro Area, which lists those Castle Connolly has determined to be in the top 10 percent of the region’s physicians—nearly 6,500 in all. Castle Connolly provides New York Magazine with a shorter version of this list for the magazine’s “Best Doctors” issue. Space prohibits New York from publishing the full list; this year, the doctors on the magazine’s list number 1,251.

Five other NSPC physicians are listed in the current edition of Castle Connolly’s Top Doctors book, along with Drs. Brisman and Pile-Spellman: Jeffrey A. Brown, M.D., F.A.C.S., neurosurgeon specializing in the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia, brain tumors and pain surgery; Alan B. Ettinger, M.D., M.B.A., neurologist specializing in the treatment of epilepsy; John A. Grant, M.D., F.A.C.S., who specializes in pediatric neurosurgery; Robert N. Holtzman, M.D., neurosurgeon specializing in cranial, spinal and peripheral nerve surgery; and Stephen T. Onesti, M.D., F.A.C.S., neurosurgeon specializing in spine surgery.

Dr. Pile-Spellman is an international leader in interventional neuroradiology, a field of medicine that uses image-guided catheter-based techniques to treat diseases of the blood vessels of the brain and spine. With more than 150 peer review scientific papers to his name, Dr. Pile-Spellman is actively involved in stroke research. He continues his research activities at Columbia University’s School of Engineering, Biomedical Engineering Department.

Dr. Brisman was the first endovascular neurosurgeon on Long Island, dual fellowship-trained in both cerebrovascular neurosurgery and interventional neuroradiology. One of approximately 100 surgeons in the U.S. trained in both techniques, Dr. Brisman authored landmark papers in the New England Journal of Medicine and Lancet Neurology. Dr. Brisman serves as Director, Cerebrovascular and Endovascular Neurosurgery, Winthrop-University Hospital (Mineola, NY) and holds the same title at South Nassau Communities Hospital (Oceanside, NY).

To select the physicians, Castle Connolly conducts a peer-review survey of physicians in the region. Surveyed physicians are asked to nominate doctors they consider exceptional, as well as those they judge to be the best in their own fields and related fields. Nominees are vetted to insure that they are board certified and licensed, and to investigate their disciplinary histories. The nominee list is adjusted to achieve geographic balance and balance across specialties.
