Pending Requirements: The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will be implementing guidelines that will require that all facilities providing VI diagnostic service in order to have claims for reimbursement approved; the performing practitioner must be certified and registered by the appropriate governing body in the diagnostic modality being performed.
The Joint Commission met with and took recommendations from diagnostic imaging experts, professional associations and accredited organizations to devise these new standards, which not only expand upon the existing requirements but also ensure that imaging protocols remain current. This was achieved by focusing on patient safety, including radiation safety, oversight of imaging services, overall staff competency and equipment maintenance. According to The Joint Commission Executive Vice President, Margaret VanAmringe, the intended goal is to “ensure that organizations providing imaging services have the requisite infrastructure and safety culture to minimize radiation exposure to patients and staff and provide safe and effective care.”
The safety standards addressed in the prepublication requirements include (iv) mandatory ongoing education for radiologic technologists, including training in radiation dose-reduction techniques; (v) minimum competency for radiology technicians, including registration and certification by July 1, 2015, by The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists These changes will be implemented in phases. The first phase, which will take effect July 1, 2014, will focus on CT, nuclear medicine, PET and MRI. The second phase is to be implemented by July 1, 2015, and will focus on fluoroscopy, required qualifications for imaging clinicians, and cone beam CT used in dental offices and oral-maxillary surgery practices.
Vascular Interventional History: December 2002 the ARRT the governing licensing body in the U.S. for registration of imaging professionals decided to split Cardiovascular Interventional Radiography into two specialties. They began a new specialty named Vascular Interventional Radiography (VI). Of all the sub specialties in Radiology, the V.I. exam has proven to be the hardest of them all.
Since January 2003 to this date worldwide only some 1500 plus V.I. professionals have sat for and passed this exam. A passing score for this exam is 75% with an average passing grade obtained of 78%. Without the availability of adequate study materials until now this has been the dilemma.
There are only some “2” locations in the U.S. to learn and train in an established program teaching future V.I. Radiographers. 99% of those currently practicing V.I. Radiography have trained and/or will be trained in an on the job program offered to those Radiographers who have experience in general Radiography and wish to train in this educational arrangement.
Jonathan Schwartz R.T.(R) (VI) has been a practicing Radiographer since 1976, and has been practicing as a Special Procedures/Vascular Interventional Radiography for 13 years. He developed a syllabus called Vascular Interventional Radiography A to Z which course he taught at Broward College, Davie Florida.
The original printed material which was geared to Cardiovascular Interventional Radiography has been out of print for at least 19 years. His first edition of his book was available from August 2008 till August 2014. His new second edition was published and released July 16, 2014 There are at least 15,000 professional performing Special Procedures/Vascular Interventional Radiography who have not sat for the registry exam and have had no available text book or exam review material until now!
