U.S News & World Report has released its 2019 list of the nation's best cancer hospitals and Buffalo's Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center ranks #14 on the list. This year's ranking is a significant jump from Roswell's #30 placement in 2018. President and CEO Candace Johnson says she and her staff are proud of the recognition.

"Our work is never done because we still have patients that suffer from this terrible disease and so we're going to work harder and do even better. But what this does is it allows us to pause for just a moment and congratulate ourselves and be proud," Johnson said.

Roswell Park is one of two cancer centers in New York to rank in the top 15, the other being Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, which ranked number two on the list. Roswell is only top 50 center in Western and Upstate New York.

Roswell was cited as a high-performing center in two subspecialty areas: colon cancer surgery and lung cancer surgery.

The rankings, which reviewed data and patient outcomes at 885 cancer centers, were based on factors including patient satisfaction, direct discharge, and survival rates. Roswell Park received the top possible scores in patient survival, patient experience, patients going home after hospitalization and advanced technologies.

“We are far higher in terms of patients going home after their care here than most other cancer centers in the country," said oncologist Stephen Edge, who serves as Vice President of Healthcare Outcomes and Policy at Roswell Park.

The top cancer hospital on the list is Houston's University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, followed by Memorial Sloan-Kettering and Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
