Tulane University has a new center to boost patient care for those with neurological diseases.

The Clinical Neuroscience Research Center will “discover, test and implement new therapies for neurologic conditions with a primary focus on stroke, dementia and traumatic brain injury,” said Dr. Gregory Bix, the center’s director.

Bix, who was recruited from Kentucky where he was director of the Center for Advanced Translational Stroke Science, will begin his research group with six people, a news release said. One of them is Dr. Xiaoying Wang, professor neurology and neurosurgery and CNRC program director of brain injury research who joined Tulane in August from Harvard University.

One of Bix’s studies funded by the National Institutes of Health researched the impact of brain injuries on children who hit their head and develop memory problems and other forms of dementia in adulthood, the release said.

He will work with Dr. Aaron Dumont, director of the Center for Clinical Neurosciences and chair of neurosurgery, to align the goals of the various organizations.
