BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — A student at a Birmingham elementary school was recently discovered to have had scabies.
On Friday afternoon, Birmingham City Schools confirmed that a student Glen Iris Elementary was “recently impacted” with a case of scabies. According to a press release sent out by the school system, administrators at Glen Iris immediately followed proper protocol by both notifying the health department and parents, as well as implementing various precautions such as disinfecting impacted items and areas.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, scabies are caused by an infestation of the skin by the human itch mite, which burrows into the skin and lays eggs. Symptoms includes rashes and itching.
Parents are encouraged to consult with their child’s doctor if they believe their child is showing any symptoms of scabies.
