PUNE: Children of a 60-year-old brain-dead Sangli woman donated her vital organs on Tuesday to give a new lease of life to two patients suffering from end-stage liver and kidney diseases in Pune and Kolhapur.
With this, Pune recorded its 63rd cadaver liver transplant this year so far. “This is the first organ donation that took place in Sangli. The donor suffered intracranial haemorrhage and was admitted to a hospital in Sangli on December 22.
She was declared brain-dead around 9pm the next day,” transplant coordinator Aarti Gokhale of Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC) said.
ZTCC, a registered body with the charity commissioner, is formed by the appropriate authority through a government resolution. It promotes cadaver organ transplant. There are four ZTCCs in Maharashtra, including one each Pune, Mumbai, Aurangabad and Nagpur.
The woman’s children were counselled for organ donation, following which they consented to donate her vital organs. “Since the hospital where she was admitted was not a recognised hospital for organ retrieval and transplant, she was moved to the Bharati Hospital in Sangli, a recognised hospital for the same,” Gokhale said.
As per ZTCC norms, the woman’s liver was allocated to a patient enrolled with the DY Patil Medical College and Hospital in Pimpri and her kidney was allocated to a patient enrolled for a kidney transplant at a hospital in Kolhapur. The organ retrieval was over by 3pm on Tuesday. The harvested liver was brought to Pune via a green corridor.
Community physician Jitendra Bhawalkar, dean of DY Patil Medical College and Hospital in Pimpri, said, “The liver recipient is a 51-year-old man. He is a teacher and works at zilla parishad school in Nashik.”
“The transplant has been successful. The recipient will be discharged soon. This is the 12 cadaver liver transplant at our hospital since October 2018,” Bhawalkar said.
