CareFirst pledges up to $1.7M to charity in COVID-19 vaccination push

CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield is looking to lead the business community in encouraging employees to get vaccinated for COVID-19 and they’re putting their money where their mouth is.

As part of their Better Together campaign, CareFirst will donate up to $1.7 million to CASA de Maryland, United Way of the National Capital Area and West Virginia Health Right. That’s $100 for every CareFirst employee who signs onto the pledge and $1,000 for every signatory employer.

The 700 signatory organizations include the University of Maryland Medical System, Greater Baltimore Medical Center and the Baltimore Ravens.

“We’re thrilled by the response we’ve seen,” said Mack McGee, the insurer’s vice president and chief marketing officer. “So much of what we’ve looked to offer was a way to indicate your support and commitment.”

John Patti talks to Mack McGee:

One of the goals of the campaign was to help cut through the noise and assure employees that the vaccines on the market are safe.

“I think a lot of it is just the speed at which all of this has happened and there’s certainly a natural pause,” McGee said.

The initiative ends Wednesday but McGee said the effort won’t stop there.

“We’re committed to getting these funds into the region,” he said. “We’re committed to having the conversations to get organizations onboard, knowing what role they play.”
