BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA, FLORIDA – The West Melbourne Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration will partner with citizens to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.

Bring your pills for disposal to the Walmart on Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Walmart is located at 845 Palm Bay Road.

The DEA cannot accept liquids, needles, or sharps, only pills or patches. The service is FREE and ANONYMOUS, no questions asked.

In 2023, DEA collected more than 1.2 million pounds of unneeded medications at more than 4,600 sites nationwide during their two, one-day events.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. The drug overdose epidemic in the United States is a clear and present public health, public safety, and national security threat.

DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day reflects DEA’s commitment to Americans’ safety and health, encouraging the public to remove unneeded medications from their homes as a measure of preventing medication misuse and opioid addiction from ever starting.

In addition, Americans have advised their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines – flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash both pose potential safety and health hazards.
