THE SPREAD OF WESTERN GENOCIDAL COLONIALISM |  1-3 p.m. via Zoom through Feb. 27. In more modern research, scholars noted that while western culture and technology spread, this spread was also accompanied by the destruction of other cultures, and ultimately, sometimes with genocide. This course will examine the connection between the spread of western culture and genocide. Tragically, there are more genocides connected to this theme than can be explored in one course, and therefore this course is somewhat of a brief survey. Nevertheless, we will explore the following questions: why did colonialism link to genocide? How does that way of thinking still affect thought patterns today? And what can be done to stop it? UNMET TRANSIT NEEDS PUBLIC HEARING | 9 a.m. The Ventura County Transportation Commission (VCTC) invites the public to share ideas about how to improve bus, paratransit, dial-a-ride, on-demand and rail service in Ventura County. VCTC will host in-person and virtual community meetings in January and a public hearing in February as part of its annual unmet transit needs process. Each meeting is an opportunity for people to let local transit operators and government leaders know what can be done to improve transit in the county. However, many in the Western world know very little about them. Where did they come from? How do they practice their religion? What inspires them or encourages them? What do they hope for? FULL MOON SUNSET NATURE HIKE | 5-7:30 p.m. Join Lanny and Rondia Kaufer for a hike to a vista point above the Ojai Valley where participants can watch the sunset afterglow and the full moon rise. The moon will appear at about 6:30 p.m. over the Topatopa Bluffs. Registrants will receive instructions on where to park. From the trailhead we’ll gradually walk about 1.5 miles on a well used dirt road with gradual elevation gain to the vista point, stopping along the way to meet some valuable edible and medicinal plants. CALIFORNIA LOCAL NEWS FELLOWSHIP | Through Feb. 21. The California Local News Fellowship is a state-funded initiative to support and strengthen local reporting, with a focus on underserved communities. The full-time, paid fellowship will place early-career journalists (with up to five years of experience) in California newsrooms for two years, starting in September 2025. The program is open to digital, print, video, audio, photo and multimedia journalists. We’re looking for candidates with relevant experience as much as formal education. Successful applicants will demonstrate core reporting skills, a commitment to a career in journalism and an interest in reporting in underserved communities. CONSTRUCTION AND TRADES TRAINING PROGRAM | Enrollment is now open for the Workforce Development Board of Ventura County’s Construction and Trades training program, designed to help residents of the Tri-Counties become competitive applicants as they take the next steps in their careers in the construction industry. LIFE STORY VOLUNTEER PROGRAM | Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice is bringing back their beloved Life Story program. VENTURA 4TH OF JULY STREET FAIR VENDOR APPLICATIONS | Through March 31. Vendor applications for the City of Ventura’s 4th of July Street Fair are now open. This annual event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 4 in Ventura’s Downtown District and brings tens of thousands of participants. DEMENTIA GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP | Every other Thursday, 1-2:30 p.m. Grief following death is anticipated and accepted, and closure is possible eventually as we deal with our loss. However, there is another form of grief, that we call “anticipatory grief”, when our loved one is still with us, but slowly declining before our eyes because of dementia. Families with loved ones who have dementia have unique situations, but all experience this kind of pre-death grief – grieving a person while they are still physically present. We call this Dementia Grief. Our support group provides a safe and confidential environment for those who are dealing with Dementia Grief and a place to share the “bad” days and the “good” days with others. WILDLIFE HABITAT IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM | Sundays and Mondays. Come one, come all! We need your help removing invasive species and improving wildlife habitat at Harmon Canyon. Our fantastic docents Terri and Kris will lead volunteers in removing non-native, invasive species from Harmon Canyon Preserve. No previous weed pulling experience is required, our docents will provide training to anyone who needs it. This volunteer opportunity requires hand pulling weeds so please bring your own gloves and any tools that you think might work well. WINTER WHALE WATCHING WITH ISLAND PACKERS | Through April 30. Hop on board for an Island Packer’s Winter Whale Watch excursion, with trips departing from Ventura Harbor thru April.
