Yellow, yellow, everywhere! When do meteorologists say peak pollen season will be in Alabama?
AccuWeather has released its 2025 allergy forecast, predicting an average pollen season for most of Alabama. However, tree pollen levels may be higher than usual, so those with allergies should take extra precautions.
While tree pollen is already making its presence felt across much of the state, when can you expect the worst? And when will grass and ragweed pollen appear, along with some much-needed relief?
Tree pollen season had an early start in Alabama
Your car might look like it's been dusted with yellow snow, but it's actually a thick layer of tree pollen.
Thanks to early spring temperatures, tree pollen levels are on the rise across Alabama.
Tree pollen will remain high until drier weather from the southwest helps end the season by early April. As tree pollen starts to subside, grass pollen season will begin in early April.
Grass pollen season starts next month and will be mild all season
For most of Alabama, grass pollen levels will remain low, but the upper northwest, near the Alabama/Tennessee border, will experience more typical levels.
AccuWeather forecasts that drier weather through early to mid-summer will result in only limited grass pollen across the state.
Ragweed pollen season will be extended due to tropical moisture
Along the coast, however, residents can expect high ragweed pollen counts and a prolonged allergy season, driven by increased tropical moisture.
Ragweed pollen originates from thistle, which is abundant throughout Alabama, particularly in the form of yellow thistle. Ragweed season typically kicks off alongside grass season, and relief won't come until fall due to its extended season duration.
When will peak allergy season be in Alabama?
Allergy season in Alabama starts early, but the peak will hit from early April to early May when all pollen seasons overlap. While relief comes as each season tapers off, expect more sneezing and be sure to stock up on allergy relief.
Ways to help those allergy symptoms
To help manage the discomfort of allergies, here are some practical things to help make this allergy season more bearable:
- Limit your time outdoors: If you must go outdoors, shower and change your clothing upon returning inside.
- Take over-the-counter antihistamines and eye drops: Benadryl, Claritin and Zyrtec are the most popular brands of antihistamines that will provide temporary to 24-hour relief.
- Keep windows shut and invest in allergen air filters for your AC or HVAC systems to minimize pollen entering your home.
