Veterans Blanket Drive: The Rotary Club of Southgate is collecting new/unused blankets for veterans through March 31. They can be store-bought or handmade. They should be light weight and easy to carry. Twin size is preferred, and emergency blankets will be accepted. Blankets will be distributed to local veterans in need. This program is geared for babies and young toddlers. Family Storytime is April 1, 8, 15, 22 at 11 a.m. Join Ms. Lynne for stories, music, dance and more. This program is geared to families with children of multiple ages. Make Time For Play is Tuesday, April 29 from 10-11:30 a.m. The storytime room will be changed into a playgroup space featuring multiple play and learning stations for children to circulate through. The stations will include dramatic play, large and small motor play, sand table, and a rotating monthly themed station. Families are welcome to come and go throughout the morning. Makin’ At Bacon: At the Bacon Memorial District Library, 45 Vinewood, Wyandotte. Kids Programs: Lego Wednesday is April 2. Did you know Bacon Library has a huge stash of Legos? Stop this week and make something extraordinary. Race the Space: Hot Wheels is Wednesday, April 30. Turn the Multipurpose Room into the Bacon Dragway using the library’s collection of Hot Wheels. Family Programs: Intro to 3D Printing: Bookmarks is Thursday, April 10at 5 p.m. Interested in 3D printing or design? Come check out our Makerspace’s 3D printer! We will be using the free and easy-to-use TinkerCAD to create your custom bookmarks. Our staff will guide you through the process of using TinkerCAD, where you will learn how to add text, shapes, and other details to the design before it is printed out. Join this super low-key weekly book club where you show up with a book of your choice and read! At each meeting the first and last 15 minutes will be designated for sharing what you’re reading/socializing with other members and then the hour and half in-between will be designated for reading. Exploring DNA Testing – Choosing the Right Company for You: Taylor Community Library, Taylor. April 2, from 6-7 p.m. Curious about your ancestry or genetic health? Join speaker Eric Migdal for an informative session on DNA testing companies and the different types of tests available. Read & Respond to Poetry: Taylor Community Library, Taylor. April 3, 10, 17, 24, from 3-4:30 p.m. Calling all poets! It’s National Poetry Month!!! We will have one of the front Community Rooms available to start reading and writing poetry every Thursday in the month of April, from 3 to 4:30pm. It’ll be a space for you to read the poetry books you’ve been meaning to get to and then respond to them in any way that you choose. Feeling bold? No-Cost Tax Preparation: Taylor Community Library, Taylor. April 5, 12, from 10:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. and April 14, from 11:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. The Accounting Aid Society (AAS) will be offering free tax preparation for individuals who qualify as lower income. T(w)een Book Club: Taylor Community Library, Taylor. April 10, from 6-7:30 p.m. T(w)een Book Club is a monthly book club suggested for tweens and teens ages 12-17 where we will read age-appropriate titles from all genres, have a snack, and do a book-related activity! Copies of our monthly book will be placed on hold and can be picked up from our front desk before our meeting. Most of the time they are also available on Hoopla or Libby. SS Eastland: Titanic of the Great Lakes: At the Bacon Memorial District Library, 45 Vinewood, Wyandotte  is Friday, April 11 at 5:30 p.m. History After Hours. Although few have heard of it, anyone who hears the story will never forget it. The SS Eastland was the greatest loss of life in a maritime disaster on the Great Lakes when she flipped onto her side in the Chicago river in 1915. If the Titanic is the story of hubris, the Eastland is a tale of unintended consequences. Hear the ill-fated tale from construction, sinking, salvage and legacy. Monguagon Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution: Monthly meeting is scheduled for Saturday, April 12, at 10:30 a.m. at Southgate Veterans Memorial Library, 14680 Dix-Toledo Rd., Southgate. Conservation will be the program. Guest speaker will be Bob Hauser from Wild Ones of Wayne County. He and his family have resided in Livonia for the past 48 years. He is a former Master Gardener, and has been interested in landscaping with native plants since 2008, also he has been a member of two Wild Ones chapters since 2010. He will tell us about the importance today of native plants in our residential setting. Currently, approximately 80% of his small quarter acre lot is home to over 35 species of native plants. Creative Writing Challenge: Taylor Community Library, Taylor. April 14, from 3-4 p.m. Calling all creative writers. We will meet at one of the front Community Rooms the second Monday of every month, from 3:00-4:00pm.  Everyone will be given a prompt, and your job will be to take this prompt to find words on signs, pictures, artwork, book spines, overheard phrases/quotes, etc. on library grounds and write them down.  When everyone has something, they will come back to the room and we will put together what we have found. Scholarship NEW DEADLINE: The Creative Art Society (CAS) announced the opening of the 2025 Visual Arts Scholarship Awards for young artists in Downriver communities. The CAS Visual Arts Scholarship Awards offer prizes, including up to $750 for first place, while second place will earn $500 and a third-place recipient will receive $250. The competition is open to artists specializing in a wide range of visual arts, including painting, sculpture, photography, graphic design, and even artistic welding. This scholarship is open to high school seniors and college students from the Downriver area who are pursuing or planning to pursue an education in visual arts. The deadline to apply is April 15. The announcement of the winners is April 20. Awards presentation is April 25 during the Art Ambience Fine Art Exhibit Opening at the Woodhaven Community Center. 48th Annual Feast of St. Joseph Celebration: The Downriver Italian American Club will host the event on Sunday, March 23, at the Wyandotte Copeland Center, 2306 Fourth Street. The festivities begin at 2 p.m. and guests will be served a traditional Sicilian pasta and bean dish, accompanied by an orange and a bread roll.The meal will be blessed by a Catholic priest. A suggested donation of $20 per person will be accepted at the door, with all proceeds directly benefiting charities that assist children and families in need within the community. We will provide the switch and keep track of the bracket, you just have to come and compete. This event is for grades 4 and up. We will have board games set up while you are waiting your turn to play. Bark for Books: Taylor Community Library, Taylor. March 27, from 5-7 p.m. Celebrate reading month with our favorite furry friends. Read aloud to a trained therapy dog for 15 minutes. Children and teens can also use their 15 minutes to practice book reports or speeches for school, or whatever you think will build their confidence in their reading and speaking skills. There are 16 slots open to read or speak aloud to a therapy dog and registration is required. Disney Movie Marathon: Taylor Community Library, Taylor. March 28, from 12-3:30 p.m. Looking for something to do during spring break? Come check out our movie marathon. At 12:15 we will be showing the classic Cinderella, we’ll have a 15-minute break, then we’ll begin our showing of Beauty and the Beast at 1:45. Popcorn and juice will be provided. Bags for Benefit: Rotary Club of Southgate is sponsoring Bags for Benefit Corn Hole Tournament on Saturday, March 29, from 6-10 p.m. This event is hosted by the Downriver Family YMCA 16777 Northline Rd, Southgate. This is a family friendly event. There are 2 person teams, but you can register and be paired with someone if you don’t have a partner. There is a limit of 30 teams. Sponsorships are available for $200. Cash bar and complimentary snacks. Each ticket purchased includes the 1st drink ticket. There will be face painting and other activities for the family. We will also have competition for the serious players. Young, old, veteran or new players, everyone is welcome, and we promise a challenging event. There will be prizes for the top placed teams. The cost is $25 per person and $50 per team of two. All proceeds from this event will benefit Southgate Rotary and The Detroit-Downriver Student Film Consortium. Spring Craft Fair & Bake Sale: At St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, 1325 Champaign, Lincoln Park,on Saturday, April 5, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The crafters and vendors from southeast Michigan will offer items for your family and home, seasonal decor and gifts for Easter and Mothers’ Day. The women of St. Michael’s offer baked goods as well as snacks and lunches for purchase.  A tin can raffle will be held for items donated by the crafters and vendors. There is no admission charge. However, attendees bringing food items for our blessing box will receive a free raffle ticket. All floors are accessible by elevator. Tables are still available. Deadline to Submit 2025 Bruce Jones Scholarship Applications (April 7): Sponsored by the Grosse Ile Nature Land Conservancy. High School seniors on Grosse Ile can apply for this scholarship by writing about their experiences working to protect our natural environment. Now is the perfect time for your high school student to complete some community service hours to protect our natural environment and then write about the experiences on the scholarship application. Sewing for Jesus: Come join us and help make dresses for girls in need worldwide. Even if you do not sew, you can come and cut bias tape that is sewn around the armhole of the dresses. Stay Sharp Kits & Pet Companions: At the Trenton Veterans Memorial Library. Stay Sharp Kits are a wonderful resource for adults (and the caregivers of adults) who are experiencing memory loss and other cognitive issues related to dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and other memory disorders. These themed kits are filled with a variety of materials and activities that have been designed to promote cognitive skills. Some activities focus more on conversation and socializing, others on motor skills and critical thinking. Meals on Wheels Drivers Needed: The Senior Alliance has partnered with the Wayne County Department of Senior Services to discover what drives you to volunteer and meet an immediate need for volunteer drivers for Meals on Wheels. The Senior Alliance, Area Agency on Aging 1-C, is a pivotal nonprofit organization in Michigan providing vital services to aging adults and adults with disabilities. Huron River Fishing Association: General meetings are held the first Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Flat Rock Community Center, 1 McGuire St. in Flat Rock. Crafters Welcome: Crafters meet every Thursday from 10-11:45 a.m. in the social hall of St. Cyprian Catholic Church on Pennsylvania Rd, Riverview. We knit, crochet and sew a variety of items such as hats and scarves for all ages, baby items, lap blankets, quilts, stuffed toys, dishcloths, and adult bibs just to name a few to donate to local groups who support those in need such at our veterans, soup kitchen clients, a local hospice and the homeless.

Genealogy Research: The Downriver Genealogical Society Library, located at 28639 Division Street in Flat Rock, is free and open for genealogy research Tuesdays from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The society began in 1980 and for the past 42 years has been collecting information on the people and cities of the downriver communities, most taken from local newspapers. Heart to Heart Hospice Volunteers needed: Heart to Heart Hospice is looking for downriver community members to join the group’s team of volunteers, who will visit with patients on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to help increase their quality of life during their final days. Visits can provide friendship, compassion and distraction from their prognosis. Activities that clients might enjoy are being read to, watching television together, talking about who and where they’ve been, their families, hearing about your day, playing cards, and so much more. Most importantly, we are looking for volunteers to provide their time, talent, and to have compassion and empathy.
