Loretto Hospital has opened its Women’s Wellness Center in Chicago, Illinois, US, which aims to address healthcare disparities and improve outcomes for women in the neighbourhood of Austin and its surrounding communities.

The facility will offer essential care and preventive health services for a wide range of women’s gynaecological health issues.

It aims to address conditions such as ovarian cysts, endometriosis, pelvic pain, polycystic ovary syndrome, abnormal uterine bleeding and vaginal prolapse.

Loretto Hospital president and CEO Tesa Anewishki said: “We believe that access and investment are the antidote to communities in crisis. When women are well, it directly impacts the entire household, and communities thrive.

“Opening a centre that specifically focuses on the health and wellness of women has been our goal for several years.

“We want to reduce barriers to essential healthcare services for women who may face transportation, financial or cultural obstacles, and we are thrilled to welcome the esteemed Dr Johnson to the Loretto Hospital family and advance the work of specialised, deserving care for women.”

The facility is being led by Dr Pierre Johnson, a surgeon with experience in high-risk obstetrics, gynaecological surgery and pelvic floor repair, as well as vaginal reconstruction and sexual health.

Dr Johnson said: “As the director of Loretto’s Women’s Wellness Center, I aim to increase awareness of our services and transform us into a world-class facility for gynaecological care by offering minimally invasive surgeries previously unavailable here.

“More than a doctor, I am an advocate for women and a partner in their healthcare journey.”

Founded in 1923 as a non-profit organisation, Loretto Hospital functions as a safety-net institution and provides care to more than 33,000 patients a year.

According to the hospital, the site aims to create “a culture of proactive medical management within the community” to improve the quality of life for local residents.
