William Carey medical students celebrate landing residencies across the country
HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) - From California to Texas and back down to Mississippi, over 100 future pinpointed the next stop in their careers.
“This is where our fourth-year (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine) students find out where they’re going to match out to in their residency, so where they’re going to spend the next three, to five years,” Dr. Italo Subbarao, William Carey University College of Osteopathic Medicine dean.
After leaving “Match Day” at WCU, the students will head to hospitals and clinics across the country.
Subbarao said the group will be working within a specific medical specialty, with the goal of becoming a fully-licensed physician.
“It might be family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, general surgery, all of these medicines that we think of when we go to see doctors,” said Subbarao.
Trey Davis is headed to Birmingham, Alabama, where he’ll be gaining experience in preliminary surgery at Brookwood Hospital.
“Before that month, I said I would be happy as long as i had a job by June,” Davis said. “After that month, I realized I couldn’t be happier anywhere else.”
Davis won’t be traveling alone, though.
Instead, he’ll be bringing his wife and children.
“They told me that family comes first,” Davis said.
Davis recalled becoming a father during his first year of medical school.
“The work still had to be done, so it took a little longer,” said Davis. “But it turned out to be one of the best things I ever did.”
For Syed Amanuddin, Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg was the perfect choice.
“My future goal is to practice rural medicine here and serve the great state of Mississippi,” Amanuddin said. “I’m really happy to be placed here at Forrest General.
“I believe it will prepare me well to serve rural communities in the future.”
Subbarao said he believed that Amanuddin’s outlook aligned nicely with the university’s overall mission.
“About two-thirds of the class chose primary care,” said Subbarao. “Over 50% of the class is staying in Mississippi and Louisiana, so we think we’ve met the mark on that.”
