Here's what's happening this week in the Chattanooga area.

Spring flings

If you have certain attributes and you don't mind a road trip, two upcoming events will be worth your while. The attributes you'll need? At one, the ability to play a kazoo. At the other, beautiful knees (men only).

— On March 28 is an attempt during the International Cherry Blossom Festival in Macon, Georgia, to set a Guinness World Record for the largest kazoo ensemble. The current record of 5,190 was set in London in 2011, but officials hope to bring the title back to Macon, where the musical instrument was invented in the 1840s by freed slave Alabama Vest. Festival admission is $5 (free to children 6 and younger). Participants are asked to buy their tickets early to help track attendance and record-setting potential. Participants will receive a free kazoo. Get details at visitmacon.org/kazoo.

— On April 4, the National Tartan Day Festival in Franklin, North Carolina, includes the second annual Bonnie Knees Contest to determine which man in a kilt has the prettiest knees. It's one of several activities celebrating Scottish, Irish and English heritage. Learn more at experiencefranklinnc.com.
