BYNG — The Ada High School baseball team got home runs from Kyler Gaddis and Will Johnson and defeated local rival Byng 7-3 to salvage a split in their Class 4A District-1 series Tuesday night at Stokes Field.

The Tuesday victory left Ada at 19-2 on the year, while Byng dropped to 15-2. Both teams are now 9-1 in 4A-1 play.

The Cougars travel to Asher tonight, while Byng is scheduled to host Pauls Valley this evening.

Ada 7, Byng 3

The Pirates struck first by two unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, thanks in part to a pair of Ada errors.

Gaddis then launched a solo home run that sailed over the fence in left field with two outs in the top of the fifth to cut the BHS lead in half at 2-1.

The Cougars tied the game with a run in the top of the sixth.

JD Dugan led off that inning with a walk and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Elvis Edwards. Keith Cook then blooped the ball into left field for a base that put runners at the corners.

Dugan scored on a sacrifice fly by Johnson that tied the game at 2-all.

The Cougars then pushed across five runs in the top of the seventh inning.

After a Gaddis base hit to lead off the inning, Ada’s next two hitters — Collin Christian and Seth Flinn — laid down exceptional bunts that turned into base hits. The bunt by Christian died a few feet down the first base line and Flinn pushed his bunt just beyond the pitcher toward third base.

With the bases loaded and one out, Edwards drove home a run with a well-executed sacrifice bunt toward first base that put Ada on top 3-2.

Keith Cook then drove in a pair of runs with his second base hit of the game, to push the AHS advantage to 5-2. Johnson then put the icing on the Cougar cake when he launched a two-run homer that sailed well beyond the fence in left field.

Byng tried to rally by taking advantage of four walks in the bottom of the seventh inning — including a free pass with the bases loaded by Lane Alexander — before AHS reliever Edwards finally retired the side.

Brock Boyles picked up the pitching win for Ada and improved to 5-0 this spring. He struck out five, walked five and allowed no earned runs while scattering three hits in six solid innings.

Kix Stephens (4-1) absorbed the loss for Byng. He struck out five and walked four in 6.2 innings. He didn’t allow a Byng hit until the Gaddis home run in the fifth inning.

Keith Cook and Gaddis both had two hits for Ada. Johnson finished 1-for-2 with a walk and three RBIs for the visitors.

Byng’s three hits came from Hagen Graham, Alexander and Kendon Wood.

WEB GEMSThere were a handful of great defensive plays in the contest.

— Byng’s Preston Welch made a nice catch of a line drive by Ada’s JD Dugan in left field for the first out of the game.

— Byng’s Callen Leslie ran down a well-hit shot by Ada’s Brock Boyles in left-center field with one out in the top of the second inning.

— Byng third baseman Kendon Wood snagged a rocket hit by Dugan for the third out of the third inning.

— Ada shortstop Elvis Edwards dove to his right to stop a ball from heading to left field and turned a sure base hit by Byng’s Hagen Graham into a fielder’s choice out to help short-circuit a Pirate comeback effort in the bottom of the seventh inning.
