Morrisons is permanently shutting 16 of its shops across the country today. The closures are part of the supermarket's major shake up which will also see certain Morrisons cafes and all market street kitchens shut up shop in a bid to cut costs.

The supermarket is closing 17 Morrisons Daily stores, with 16 shutting today, Wednesday April 16, and the final store joining them on May 14. Some of the stores affected contain Post Offices.

There is an ongoing "renewal programme" of Morrisons services, in which the brand is looking to reduce costs and boost growth , the Express reports.

However, reports say the 365 workers at risk of redundancy due to the closures will be deployed elsewhere in the company.

The closures come after the chain revealed last month that they would be closing a number of convenience stores, cafés and in-store counters, including many hot food, meat and fish counters.

Morrisons is set to shut down 52 in-store cafés , 18 Market Kitchens, 17 Morrisons Daily convenience stores and 35 meat and fish counters as part of new store changes.

Cutbacks also extend to 13 of the store’s florists and four of its pharmacies.

The supermarket said in a statement last month: "Morrisons has made the difficult decision to close some Morrisons Daily stores, some of which contain Post Offices.

"We fully recognise the inconvenience this will cause for our customers and apologise for the short notification as these branches close between April 9 and May 14.

"We have reviewed Post Office provision in these areas and for most of these affected branches we are advertising the vacancies."

In-store cafes will be shut in five London stores, with cafes in Leeds, Portsmouth and Glasgow also affected.

Commenting on the closures, Morrisons CEO Rami Baitiéh said: "The changes we are announcing today are a necessary part of our plans to renew and reinvigorate Morrisons and enable us to focus our investment into the areas that customers really value and that can play a full part in our growth.

"In most locations the Morrisons Café has a bright future, but a minority have specific local challenges and in those locations, regrettably, closure and re-allocation of the space is the only sensible option."
