Lucknow's SGPI to get funds for robotic surgery project
LUCKNOW: The UP government will provide funds for Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute’s(SGPGI) robotic surgery project.
The equipment which is surgical robot called Da Vinci, will cost about Rs 27 crore, and will place SGPGI among 50 medical centers in the country with the facility of surgical robots.
SGPGI director Prof Rakesh Kapoor said: “We are buying the equipment through bank loan which has been guaranteed by the state government.”
Under the robotic surgery, a robot performs a surgery with the help of a camera, forceps and cutting arm.
However, the functions are controlled by a surgeon who explores the affected area with the help of camera and commands as required.
“The quality of surgery improves because the trauma is reduced significantly. Instead of making a large cut, we make three holes for planting the flap,” said a surgeon at SGPGI. He added that it is useful in urology and gastro-intestinal surgeries too. The robotic surgery is popular among plastic surgeons, obstetrics and gynaecologists in the Western countries.
The King George’s Medical University, too, wanted to procure the equipment but it went to SGPGI.
