Russia urges CIS members to help rebuild Syria

The Russian defence minister yesterday called on the Commonwealth of Independent States to take part in the reconstruction of Syria.

During a meeting of the CIS Defence Ministers Council, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said:

“Most of the Syrian territory has been liberated from the militants, and negotiations are underway with other terrorists on laying down arms. All conditions for political settlement and the revival of Syria as a single and indivisible state.”

Shoigu urged the CIS to take part in restoring peace in Syria. “Today, it is possible to provide assistance in many spheres in Syria. There is mine clearance of the territory, joint patrolling of de-escalation zones, humanitarian assistance, restoration of infrastructure. We count on your support, which would demonstrate our unity in the fight against international terrorism and ensuring common security.”

The Commonwealth of Independent States includes Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
