Fly Jamaica passengers return to Toronto after Guyana crash-landing

By News Staff

Fly Jamaica passengers who survived a crash-landing in Guyana had to wait a full week to finally get a flight back to Toronto.

The flight landed at Pearson airport Friday around 9 a.m.

Eighty-two Canadians were on the previous plane, a Fly Jamaica Boeing 757-200. It was carrying 118 people, two infants and eight crew members when it crash-landed at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport on Nov. 9.

Officials said the plane had a hydraulic problem about 40 minutes after takeoff.

All passengers survived and six people had only minor injuries.

A Brampton woman who arrived at Pearson Friday morning said the airline didn’t provide passengers with support or compensate them for unexpected costs.

“Fly Jamaica didn’t do nothing to help us,” Pooranday said. “Not once did they call to say, ‘How are you doing? How are you coping?’”

And their troubles didn’t end there.

Eight Guyanese firefighters were arrested earlier this week after cash and gadgets belonging to both passengers and crew members were removed from the airplane when the firefighters were helping passengers off the plane, according to the Guyana Standard.

“At the airport, (Fly Jamaica staff) promised that our items are safe and we will get it back,” Pooranday said. “When we get our bag, nothing.

“I got my suitcase that I checked in but my valuables were in my side bag — and it’s gone. We got the side bag, (but) no valuables.”

The pilot’s cash and cellphone were also missing.
