MARYLAND, March 10 - For Immediate Release: Thursday, October 3, 2024

MCPD’s series of virtual coffee chats designed to create a welcoming and inclusive space for newcomers and new immigrants will also be discussed

The featured guests on this week’s En Sintonía con el Concejo del Condado de Montgomery (In Tune with the Montgomery County Council) will include Luisa Cardona, director of the Mid-County Regional Services Center in Montgomery County; Ingrid Lizama, communications manager at the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services’ Latino Health Initiative; David del Pozo, program manager at Montgomery County’s Latino Health Initiative; and Mariela Leon, Hispanic community liaison with the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD). The show will air on Friday, Oct. 4 at 2 p.m. on Radio America (WILC 900AM) and is streamed on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Amazon Music.

The radio show will highlight the Hispanic Heritage Month Festival and Health Fair "Ama Tu Vida, Ama Tu Herencia." The event will occur from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6, at the Marian Fryer Town Plaza in Wheaton. This free event will feature local vendors offering authentic Latin American cuisine, handcrafted artisanal jewelry, traditional crafts, folklore items celebrating Hispanic Heritage, live music and performances. Additionally, the health fair will offer health screenings such as HIV/Syphilis and oral health screenings provided by the County’s Department of Health and Human Services Dental Clinic, information on health resources, and a Zumba class.

The radio show will conclude with information about "Cafecito con Mariela," a series of virtual coffee chats designed to create a welcoming and inclusive space for newcomers and new immigrants. The aim is to emphasize community safety and build trust with the Montgomery County Police Department. "Cafecito con Mariela" presents a valuable opportunity to interact with local officers and the Hispanic Community Liaison, gradually becoming more at ease for future face-to-face meetings within a supportive and empowering environment. Community members are encouraged to explore how their local police department can genuinely assist them. Registration is encouraged.

The Montgomery County Council and Radio America have entered a partnership that provides the Latino community with key information on issues and programs. The partnership also provides a forum for residents to express their views and ask questions. The partnership includes the weekly one-hour show each Friday on the Washington metropolitan area’s most popular Spanish language station.

Each week, the show features host Marcela Rodriguez, Council program manager and public information officer, and guests talking about important issues before the Council and provides information about programs offered by the County to help residents.
