Freetown, SIERRA LEONE – In a heartening display of unity and determination, communities spanning six districts in Sierra Leone have rallied together under the auspices of the Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion (ICPNC) to promote peace and harmony. Partnering with UN-Women, the ICPNC has spearheaded the revival of “Civil Society Coalitions for Peace,” kindling optimism for a brighter future.
The inaugural gatherings, convened in Kamakwie and other district centers, witnessed enthusiastic participation from a diverse array of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) committed to peace-building initiatives. Deliberations centered on the pivotal role of these coalitions in advancing good governance and addressing the pressing needs of communities.
Henryson Jusu, Deputy Director of Planning at ICPNC, underscored the widespread demand for such grassroots initiatives. Emphasizing their significance in fostering citizen engagement and democratic participation, Jusu highlighted the crucial role of district-level CSO coalitions in cultivating sustainable peace.
“Our engagement with these communities heralds a new era in the pursuit of enduring peace and national cohesion,” remarked Jusu, expressing confidence that with united and empowered communities, the prospects for a harmonious and prosperous nation are promising.
Notably, executive leadership was democratically elected in each district, signaling a collective commitment to action. Representatives from various CSOs, comprising the newly appointed leaders, pledged unwavering dedication to the advancement of their communities’ well-being.
As these local initiatives gain momentum, they serve as beacons of hope, driving grassroots efforts to foster lasting peace and unity across Sierra Leone. Through collaborative action and steadfast commitment, these community-led endeavors hold the promise of a brighter and more peaceful future for all. PSN/29/4/2024
